The Power of Metaphors
Posted on Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

One of the many tools at your disposal once you begin to master covert and conversational hypnosis is the metaphor. Metaphors can be very powerful in communicating and suggesting strong imagery and positive emotional states.

Having a clear idea of the boundaries of metaphors can make you a better all around conversationalist. Not to mention, a highly effective practitioner of covert hypnosis.

In the following article, John D. Casnig offers insight into the proper use of metaphors and how many people mess up this simple communication tool.

Using Metaphor Effectively

We’ve all heard a politician on their soapbox, pushing for some policy change or cleaning up after a scandal. Some will cut out a sharp point, while others leave the audience in bewilderment. You can often thank - or blame - the use of metaphor for the outcome of a speech.

Most often, the problem comes down to either poorly chosen metaphors, or “mixed” metaphors. A mixed metaphor is one in which half of the statement refers to something metaphorically that doesn’t match the other half. Here’s a hilarious example by cartoon superstar Homer Simpson:

–”These people are the glue that holds together the gears of our society.”–

The metaphors “glue” and “holds together” aren’t very appropriate when imagining gears. Gears are used in situations where there is movement, while glue is used to prevent movement. A sentence that puts these completely incompatible metaphors together is funny because it is perfectly ineffective but easily visualized.

Had Homer said “…the glue that holds together the pieces of society”, it would’ve been an effective metaphor and statement, but not at all funny. This is because “glue”, “holds together” and “pieces” are all metaphors belonging to the same metaphor system, one that, in this case, suggests that society is a solid construct of many parts.

But had Homer used half of the metaphors from “glue” and the other half from, say, “chemistry”, many listeners would not have found humor at all, having too little knowledge from chemistry to find the metaphors reachable. If you want people to find what you are pointing to in a metaphor, make sure it’s reachable to them.

Take great care in selecting every metaphor you are using in a sentence, paragraph or entire work. Do the metaphors you use work well together? Do they create an image in the reader’s mind that is consistent and easily visualized? Will most readers identify with the metaphor systems you refer to?

Points to remember when building effective metaphors:

1) Make your metaphors consistent.
2) Make sure your metaphor is easy to visualize.
3) Make sure your metaphor is reachable.

The metaphor has been held in high regard by many cultures for thousands of years. Its use as a tool in the right hands can build imagery that will stand the test of time. In the wrong hands, the metaphor will make one’s words fall flat, becoming soon forgotten. Build your metaphors to last - craft them carefully, deliberately and reachably…

John D. Casnig is a writer and publisher in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. His current focus is on the metaphor and its use as a teaching and learning tool. His online arts magazine, Jaywalker Magazine of the Arts, features some of his work, as well as works from other people in his region.

How to Hypnotize a Girl Without Really Trying

How to Hypnotize Anyone Without Getting Caught.

When I first decided to take the plunge and actually spend money on a hypnosis home study course I was just as skeptical as you probably are. Can it really be that easy to learn how to hypnotize anyone? But I thought what the hey, this kind of stuff has always fascinated me and it’s about time to see if it actually works.

It took awhile for me to realize that Yes, it does work, and quite well at that.

At first read, I was a little dazzled by the things I was discovering and also a little intimidated about getting started using these powerful tools.

Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try. I met this girl, Emma, on the patio outside of Starbucks. And so all I did was ask her a lot of questions about herself and the things that she was really passionate about in her life.

And of course, Emma was more than eager to talk about herself. And just by my listening carefully, she was giving me all ammo I needed to anchor those passionate feelings to me!

So in my own clumsy newbie way, I started peppering the conversation with a few hypnotic phrases I learned from Nathan’s course.

It was kind of funny, when we first started talking it seemed like she couldn’t wait to interrupt me with something she had to say. But after a few minutes of applying these techniques it was like she was hanging on my every word!

I had her rapt attention. And I wasn’t really even trying very hard. I just wanted to see if this stuff really worked. Because the truth is I was really not interested in this girl and I didn’t really think it would be right to take this any farther.

I was not about to make her my hypnotic guinea pig just to test a few theories. So, I made to leave.

Emma pouted,”You have to go?”
“Yeah, I got this thing…”
“Oh.”
“Nice talking to you,Emma” I turned and walked away.
“Wait!” she said.
I turned around.
” I’m usually around here for a while after 4:30 if you ever want to,you know, talk again.” She flipped her hair, and gave me this big smile.
“I’ll remember that.” I said and walked away.

It really was too bad that I wasn’t attracted to Emma, as it was quite apparent to me that I had just made a conquest.

I also discovered that covert hypnosis is almost too easy to do. I wish I had access to this stuff back when I was doing sales!

I feel really fortunate to have stumbled across “How to Hypnotize Anyone Without Getting Caught.” I have yet to “Rock the World” but in many ways I have become more confident and influential with each passing week.

I just wanted you to know that I think this is the easiest hypnosis program on the net.
